Making a piano sound it’s best Most pianos contain more than 200 strings which must be tuned, and more than 10,000 individual parts which must all be kept in proper adjustment for the piano to function properly and sound its best. Your piano is one of the most extensive and mechanically complex items you will ever own. Properly maintained, it will outlast your car, and even possibly your home.
What is a Registered Piano Technician (RPT)? A member of the Piano Technicians Guild, the Registered Piano Technician (RPT) is recognized as being qualified to service pianos in homes, businesses and educational institutions. As an RPT the member must pass a comprehensive series of examinations covering maintenance, repair and tuning of pianos.
Your piano is unique. The RPT is able to evaluate your instrument and provide an appropriate maintenance program based on your individual needs. When you engage an RPT to service your piano you are assured by exam certification that you have hired a highly-qualified service professional.
Pro Piano Servicing Guide Tuning: Adjusting the tightness of the strings to change the pitch; piano technicians use a special wrench called a tuning hammer to turn the tuning pins. Regulation: Adjusting all of the moving parts inside a piano to make it sound its best. Reshape Hammers: Hammers are felt-covered wooden mallets that strikes a string to produce a note when a key is touched. After constantly striking the string, the hammer develops grooves and looses its original shape. Reshaping involves sanding out the groves in the hammer and shaping the hammer to its original form. Voicing: Softening or hardening of the hammer to give the string it’s best tone. Replace Strings: Taut metal wires made of steel or copper vibrate when struck by hammers; treble notes have three strings, middle notes have three with a few in the lower middle area having sometimes two.The upper bass has two strings per note and the lower bass has one. Repair & Recondition Action: The combination of several thousand moving parts that work together to make the piano work is called the ACTION. Usually in this section of the piano there is a need of cloth replacement, along with some cleaning and lubrication. Repair Pedals: Pressing on the pedals with your feet causes the piano's sound to either soften or sustain the sound. Repair Soundboard • the heart of the piano; a large, thin piece of wood glued to the piano back; the soundboard increases the volume the strings make when they vibrate. Usually damaged soundboards have an undesirable buzz to their sound. Repairing this involves reglueing. Replace Keys: Most pianos have 88 keys spanning 7 1/3; octaves. A key is a lever. When you depress it, the motion is transferred to the action. The action causes the hammer to hit the strings and the vibration creates a sound. The piano has 36 black keys and 52 white keys. Ivories often get chipped, discolored and worn. Usually the ivories are removed and new plastic key tops are used to replace them.
